Wine Description:
2020 has certainly not been a lucky year: the pandemic, hurricanes, and hail. Nature, however, was able to surprise us again this time, and we have to consider ourselves lucky to have been spared the violent weather that hit areas not far from us in the province of Verona. The ripening of the grapes proceeded somewhat in fits and starts, especially because of the rain in the summer.
The good weather in September, however, in combination with our decision not to accelerate the harvest, enabled us to obtain excellent quality grapes. For the reasons we have mentioned, the harvest was prolonged and, like all long harvests, this made it possible to choose the best time to harvest in every single plot and for every single variety, from Corvinone to Corvina, and from Oseleta to Rondinella.
The work we carried out in the last few weeks in the vineyard, but also in the previous months, to contain plant vigour and select the bunches, did the rest. One of the most beautiful hills in Valpolicella Classica yields the grapes for this fragrant red in which the most elegant grape, Corvina, is completed by a small percentage of the more virile and feistier Oseleta.
The aromatic profile ranges from wild fruit to black pepper, leaving soft notes of soil and tobacco in the background. The palate is firm, taut and at the same time gentle. A wine of great class and finesse.
About Allegrini Winery:
The company, which is among the most important landowning families, experienced a profound period of transformation starting in the 1960s with Giovanni Allegrini. Recognized as one of the greatest architects of the rebirth of Valpolicella, Giovanni perfected the art of winemaking, meticulously selecting the grapes and introducing some important innovations in viticulture and oenology.
One of the most prestigious winegrowing districts in Italy, Valpolicella has been dedicated to viticulture since ancient times, as the etymology of its name confirms: ‘val polis cellae’ – the ‘valley of the many cellars’. Located in western Veneto, between Verona and Lake Garda, it is bordered to the north by the Lessini Mountains.
The area called Valpolicella Classica, the most supremely well-suited to the production of fine, prestigious wines due to its predominantly hilly location, is made up of 5 municipalities: Sant’Ambrogio, San Pietro in Cariano, Fumane, Marano and Negrar. The soil is mainly calcareous, and, geologically, scholars believe it dates back to the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. The climate is generally mild and temperate with between 900 and 1100 mm of rainfall per year. The area is steeped in history and culture: those who visit easily come across ancient churches, Renaissance villas and important examples of rural architecture.
